After considering several other Big Ten scholarship offers, Lyons Township defensive back/wide receiver Matt Harris made a verbal commitment to Northwestern after meeting with NU coach Pat Fitzgerald late last week.
The LT senior-to-be also finished as the state runner-up in the long jump (23-8.5) and 12th in the 110 high hurdles (14.91) of the Class 3A State finals.
Last season, the 6-foot, 170-ppound Harris rushed 60 times for 350 yards and caught 52 passes for 707 yards, accounting for seven touchdowns for the Lions. Blessed with tremendous speed, he also returned kickoffs and punts in addition to serving as the Lions’ lockdown cornerback.
Under head coach Kurt Weinberg, the Lions have made consecutive Class 8A state quarterfinal appearances, losing to Mount Carmel (2011) and Loyola (2012) in the playoffs.
