It turns out that switching Pat Hart from quarterback to linebacker this season was the right move for the Fenwick football team.

Hart intercepted a pass early in the first quarter of the Friars’ game against St. Laurence on Saturday night and ran it back for a 50-yard touchdown. The pick kicked off a touchdown bonanza for the Friars, who clobbered their Catholic League White opponent 50-0 at Morton West High School.

Fenwick (4-1, 2-0) scored two more touchdowns in the opening quarter. Running back Robert Spillane found the end zone from five yards out and Bob Somers trotted past the goal line from 15 yards out as the Friars’ offensive line dominated the Vikings (1-4, 0-1).

Hart picked off St. Laurence quarterback Bob Kelly again in the second quarter and ran it back for a 30-yard TD. Spillane caught a three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gino Cavalieri with 31 seconds left in the half and Fenwick sauntered into the locker room up 35-0 at the break.

While the Friars dominated on offense, their defense followed suit. Fenwick held Vikings running back Julian Gonzalez to a mere 17 yards rushing on the night. St. Laurence’s offense only gained 64 yards total on the ground.

After forcing a safety in the third and Mike Kozrya’s 14-yard touchdown run, Fenwick’s Jack Rafferty closed out the Friars’ scoring with a 90-yard interception run back.

Fenwick hosts Gordon Tech in a league cross-over game on Friday (Sept. 28, 7:30 p.m.) at Morton West. Gordon Tech is 2-3 overall on the season.
