If you have expired prescription drugs taking up space in your medicine cabinet, don’t simply flush them down the toilet or pour them down the sink, where they could end up polluting the water supply. Instead, you can take them to the North Riverside Police Department, 2359 Desplaines Ave., on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The police department is partnering with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration during its National Take Back Day to prevent contaminating rivers, streams and drinking water.

Since the program began in 2010, the DEA has collected almost 500 tons of expired of unwanted prescription drugs. The North Riverside Police Department will have a drop box set up in the lobby of the police department, where people can simply dispose of their unwanted medications.

For more information, contact the police department at 447-9191.
