The Lyons Township boys and girls cross country teams, along with a couple of Riverside-Brookfield runners, all competed at the IHSA State Meet held at Detweiller Park in Peoria last weekend. The races were highlighted by a top flight performance from the Lyons Township boys team.

Lyons Township boys cross country

The Lions captured third in the state with 125 points in the Class 3A meet on Saturday behind York (82), which won its 28th state championship under iconic coach Joe Newton, and state runner-up O’Fallon (117).

Lyons’ top runners included Michael Matusiak (11th, 14:38), Ryan Speir (17th, 14:43), Dan Lupano (39th, 14:58), Mike Accetura (54th, 15:07), James Ryan (66th, 15:10), Henry Hostetler (73rd, 15:14), and Cody Riesterer (73rd, 15:24).

LT girls cross country

The Lions scored 491 points to notch 20th place in the team standing of the Class 3A meet. Senior Haley Prokaski paced LT with a time of 17:33, good for 45th overall, followed by teammates Lexy Rudofski (107th, 18:15) and Randie Speir (148th, 18:37).

Other state qualifiers who ran the Detweiller Park course for the Lions included freshman Natalie Jaramillo (153rd, 18:42), Kate Heinz (174th, 18:54), Elaine Smith (181st, 18:58) and Rachel Walsh (187th, 19:10).

RB cross country

Kevin Faje, the Bulldogs’ lone boys state qualifier, recorded a time of 16:03 (pace 5:21 per mile) to finish 129th overall in the individual results of the Class 2A meet. The talented junior also led RB to a regional title and sixth place showing in sectional competition this season.

In the girls Class 2A race, RB junior Clare Bollnow recorded a personal best time of 18:52 to cross the finish line 96th. The RB girls team also claimed a regional championship this fall and took eighth place at the sectional.
