With the scoring tandem of Dan Dwyer and Luke Lattner out of the lineup, the Fenwick boys basketball team didn’t have much fire power heading into its showdown against Brother Rice on Friday night. The Friars hung around for a quarter before succumbing to a 58-34 loss.

Dwyer, who is shooting 68 percent from the field his season, has been nursing a hairline fracture in his toe. He practiced on Thursday but the toe swelled before game time on Friday. Lattner, Fenwick’s offensive engine, was held out of the lineup due to an illness. Both players are expected back this week, according to head coach John Quinn.

“We hit a little roadblock this week with injuries and illnesses, but it’s expected this time of year,” said Quinn. “We just have to move on from this loss and be ready for the next game. Hopefully, everyone will be back and healthy and ready to go.”

Freshman Michael Smith scored 11 points for the Friars (5-2), who trailed 32-21 at halftime. Tom Planek added eight points.

Alex Majewski led Brother Rice with 21 points.

The Friars host Providence on Friday (7 p.m.) — just their second home game on the season — before participating in the always competitive Proviso West Holiday Tournament.

The Proviso West Holiday Tournament has expanded to 32 teams this year and offers every team at least three games. Fenwick begins the tournament on Dec. 26 against the host, Proviso West, at 3:45 p.m.
