While changes to a large, flashing billboard sign at First Avenue and Cermak Road in North Riverside are still in preliminary stages, we’d suggest a couple of things if the company who owns the sign comes a-calling.

At the very least, reopen negotiations on a revenue-sharing agreement. The only way that sign should even have been allowed in the first place is if the village gets something other than sore eyes for it. Put it in writing and make it stick.

Better yet, convince the company to take the sign down once and for all. When operational, it’s a garish distraction. Sitting there broken, it’s a blight. That corner would be better off without it.
