Clifford L. “Skip” Herbst, 88, died Jan. 13, 2013 at his home in Hot Springs, Ark.
He was born Sept. 17, 1924 on the Rock Island Arsenal to Peter and Ida Erickson Herbst and attended Rock Island High School. Mr. Herbst graduated from St. Ambrose College, across the river in Davenport, Iowa, and then headed to the University of Illinois, where he earned his master’s degree.
Mr. Herbst devoted his professional life to education, beginning his career as a teacher and tennis coach at Rock Island High School. He was a school business manager in Wilmette and Niles, and then served as assistant superintendent and business manager at Riverside-Brookfield High School for 25 years.
After retirement, Mr. Herbst and his wife, Jackie, lived in Hot Springs for 23 years.
Mr. Herbst is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jacqueline Avery Herbst, whom he married on Nov. 22, 1950; his children, Larry (Judy) Herbst, Lisa (Bill) Noirot and Rick (Sarah) Herbst; his grandchildren, Alison, Rob, Brad, Ben, Alex, Jack and Charlie; and his great-grandchildren, Ryan and Keira.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his older brothers, Willie and Kenny.
Mr. Herbst chose to donate his body for medical study. His ashes will be interred at the Presbyterian Kirk in the Pines in Hot Springs Village at a later date.
The family will receive relatives and friends at a visitation on Sunday, Jan. 27 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Ivins/Moravecek Funeral Home, 80 E. Burlington St. in Riverside.
