When Gov. Pat Quinn announced the names of municipalities and other agencies receiving grants under the Illinois Transportation Enhancement program on Jan. 30, Riverside officials weren’t the only ones to come away disappointed.

Also failing to make the cut was an application from the village of Brookfield, which had sought $635,000 to help fund $700,000 in streetscape improvements in the 3700 block of Grand Boulevard and parts of Prairie Avenue and Fairview Avenue.

Among the improvements called out in the application were new street lights, mid-block bump outs on Grand Boulevard, replacing sidewalks with brick pavers and planting 16 new trees.

The application also included a request for funding a new welcome sign for the village at the intersection of 31st Street and Grand Boulevard.

In 2007, Brookfield used ITEP funding to improve the streetscape in the Eight Corners business district and for welcome signs at several entry points to the village.
