Brookfield has experienced a rash of burglaries in the last two months, including three within a 24-hour period last week.
Since the first of the year, 10 residential burglaries have been reported in the village. According to police, seven of those have happened in the past three weeks. All but two of the 10 burglaries have taken place south of Ogden Avenue.
The break-ins typically have occurred during the daytime hours while the victims were at work. In most instances, burglars gain entry to the homes through windows or doors that can’t be seen from the street.
In a press release issued Thursday, police asked residents to be vigilant in reporting suspicious people in their neighborhoods and to beware of door-to-door solicitors. Police said the burglars are likely knocking on doors to see if anyone is home prior to breaking in.
The latest incidents were reported on Feb. 27 and 28. A resident of the 4500 block of Oak Avenue reported that he noticed his home had been burglarized when he returned home from school about 5 p.m. on Feb. 27.
Entry was gained through the rear door to the home and all of the rooms of the house were ransacked. Taken from the home were two flat-panel TVs, video game systems and games, a laptop computer, a digital camera, jewelry, designer purses, two leather jackets and two swords.
The same day about 7 p.m., a resident of the 4400 block of Deyo Avenue reported that when she came home from work, she noticed the garage door open. Police reported that someone had kicked in the rear door to the residence and removed jewelry, two flat-panel TVs, a laptop computer and three bottles of wine.
At 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 28, a resident of the 4600 block of Maple Avenue reported he had just returned home from work and discovered an open kitchen window on the side of the house. The resident reported that a TV was missing from the home.
