Bessie Sliva Picha (nee Novy), 96, a resident of North Riverside and a former longtime resident of Brookfield, died March 28, 2013 at the Scottish Home in North Riverside, where she lived for the past 10 years.
Born Oct. 25, 1916 in Chicago to Stanislav and Bohumila Novy, she grew up on the Near South Side of Chicago and worked for many years as a beautician before moving to the western suburbs.
On May 25, 1935 Ms. Sliva Picha married Frank Sliva and lived in Brookfield, enjoying a wonderful marriage until Mr. Sliva’s death in 1983. On June 22, 1988, she married Joseph Picha and moved to Lakeview, Ark., where she lived until Mr. Picha’s death in 2002.
For the past 10 years, Ms. Sliva Picha lived at the Scottish Home, where she enjoyed many friendships.
She is survived by her sons, Roger, of California, and Paul, of LaGrange Park; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her son, Frank Picha Jr.
A funeral service was held April 3 at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Forest Park. Entombment was in the Des Plaines Mausoleum of Woodlawn Cemetery.
