Voters heading into Ames School in Riverside to vote just prior to 8 a.m. got a bit of a scare, when a bolt of lightning struck a large elm tree on the front lawn of the school, 86 Southcote Road.

The lightning scorched a strike path through the trunk of the tree, which was removed by a tree service during the afternoon.

It’s the second time in the last few years at Ames School that a large tree has suffered damage during a storm. A few years ago, a mature tree that shaded the school’s playground was toppled during a violent storm. School was not in session when that incident occurred.
