North Riverside has just gone through a rough election and is about to enter a period of change inside village hall.

The shake-up in the police department is the first, but we don’t believe the last, change residents will see. It’s a tough situation. Tony Garvey has been a good police chief and leaves the top spot with his department in excellent shape.

That said, we believe Lane Niemann will be an excellent chief. That Garvey chose Niemann to be his deputy in 2009 tells you a lot about the relationship the two have. We’re convinced they will be able to continue working closely together to maintain the department’s reputation and level of service.

We wish both of them well as they begin this uneasy transition to the future.
