James Derrig, left, and Liam Cote, placed their hats over their hearts for the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance during opening ceremonies for the Brookfield Little League season.

“Play Ball!” could be heard Sunday from a loudspeaker at Brookfield’s Roy A. Overholt Field.

But before a first pitch was thrown, the 42 teams, from T-ball to senior girls softball, marched from S.E. Gross School to the field at Kiwanis Park in the annual Little League parade.

Players, their coaches and family members walked the half mile to usher the 2013 season. A ceremonial first pitch was tossed by the man whose name is on the field. Overholt, who lives across the street from the field he takes care of, was accompanied by his wife, Audrey, to the pitcher’s mound.

This year will make the 50th of the Roy A. Overholt Baseball Tournament, which is held annually in August.
