Amy Delbecq, of Brookfield, received the Ferwerda Merit Scholars Award at Beloit College’s Honors Day Convocation on May 1. Delbecq is a junior.

Olivia Legan, the daughter of Christopher and Christine Legan, of Riverside, has been elected to Lawrence University’s (Appleton, Wis.) chapter of Lambda Sigma, a national honor society that fosters leadership, scholarship, fellowship and the spirit of service. Students are initiated at the end of their freshman year. Legan is a 2012 graduate of the Illinois Math and Science Academy.

Three local residents received advanced professional degrees from the College of Professional Studies at National University of Health Sciences during commencement ceremonies on April 19 in Lombard.

Receiving their Doctor of Chiropractic degrees were Riverside residents Brian Hutcheson and Nicholas Kavouriaris and Brookfield resident Michael Quintana.

Dominican University in River Forest announced in April that the following Brookfield students were named to the school’s honor list (3.5+ GPA) for the fall 2012 semester: Andrea Cardoso, Jessica Kalinski, Erwin Kehrt and Jacob Smith.

Named to the school’s dean’s list (3.8 GPA) for the fall semester were North Riverside residents Yuritzi Chavez, Rebecca Durec, Jacqueline Glosniak and Danijel Golub; Riverside residents Emily Kincanon, Rachel Kunkel and Samantha Lamas; and Brookfield residents Kimberly Kwasny and Willa Skeehan.

Augustana College in Rock Island announced in April that the following local students were named to the dean’s list (3.5 GPA) for the fall 2012 semester: Brookfield residents Brittany Hite, Paul Landahl, Kaitlynn Markowski and Natalie Viscariello and Riverside resident Isaac Lauritsen.

In May, Lauritsen won second place in the school’s 2013 Ethics Essay Contest for his essay “The War on Terrorism and the End of Human Rights.” Lauritsen was awarded $50 for placing second.

Six Brookfield residents were among the 27 Lyons Township High School students who won awards for their performance on the National Latin Exam. Kevin Engstrom won the summa cum laude award for Level 1, while other Level 1 winners included Brenden Kelley (maxima cum laude), Claire Meany (maxima cum laude), Haley Sliwa (magna cum laude) and Erin Engstrom (magna cum laude). Earning a maxima cum laude award in Level 2 was Aleksandr Glavnik.

Three St. Louise de Marillac School eighth-graders competed in the Illinois State History Fair on May 2 in Springfield.

Brendan Copp won honorable mention for his research paper, Michael Keegan received a “superior” score for his paper and a third student received a “superior” score for her exhibit and was recognized by the Illinois Daughters of the American Revolution.

In addition, Danny Zontos’ project on the history of Midway Airport won him a trip to the regional competition.

The project is currently on display at the Clear-Ridge Historical Society, where Zontos did research. On May 22, Zontos’ project will be brought to Midway Airport for the thousands of visitors passing through each day.

Brookfield resident Kalyn Harris, a freshman at Lyons Township High School, was recently elected sophomore class board president for the 2013-14 school year. Each grade level elects class board officers who plan and assist with various events and fundraisers throughout the year.
