Giving a hand: Mary Beth Hepp (sixth from left) accepts a 00 check from The North Riverside Firefighters Union Local 2714.

In April, members of the North Riverside Firefighters Union Local 2714 presented checks to two nonprofit groups. The union made a $1,500 donation to The Soldiers Project, which provides free psychological counseling to soldiers returning from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. Chris Poulos accepted the check on behalf of the organization.

Meanwhile, the union donated $500 to Brookfield’s Helping Hand Rehabilitation Center to help the agency recover from a devastating fire to the thrift store they have operated for years on Grand Boulevard in Brookfield. Mary Beth Hepp, the executive director of Helping Hand, accepted the check on behalf of the agency.

Helping Hand provides programs and employment services to help people with developmental disabilities achieve their highest level of independence.
