Dave Becker, senior manager of learning experiences for the Chicago Zoological Society, participated in the “Champions for Change” program on June 11 at the White House in Washington, D.C.
The event focuses on libraries and museums that make a difference for their neighborhoods and the nation, by reaching families with learning opportunities and offering experiences for teens to develop skills in science.
Champions for Change was created as an opportunity for the White House to feature groups of Americans — individuals, businesses and organizations — who are doing extraordinary things to empower and inspire members of their communities.
At Brookfield Zoo, Becker leads Nature Start, the CZS’ early childhood initiative. For the past 12 years, Becker and his team have expended the boundaries of early childhood environmental education at Brookfield Zoo, as well as within the national and international zoo and aquarium community.
Becker first began working with children as a 16-year-old youth volunteer and has continued to work with children and families throughout his career, including 15 years as a social worker and almost 20 years in the museum business.
