Perhaps you’ve seen a TV news report yesterday about a woman who ended up with tetanus after allegedly cutting her finger on a bench at Brookfield Zoo. What happened to her is really terrible, and I hope she gets well, soon.

But I’m not sure what the point of this story is. As far as I can tell (and I’ve checked the county court records) she hasn’t filed suit against the zoo, although I suppose that’s possible in the future. And while I’m sure there are benches that could use a little maintenance at the zoo, the one they show specifically in the clip doesn’t look like a particular health hazard.

Sure the nut and bolt holding the bench to the frame is a bit rusty. I can’t imagine that not happening. Those benches are exposed to the elements 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. She’s calling on the zoo to fix their benches, but it seems like there’s some sort of unspoken message here that I’m just not getting.

Anyway, here’s the link to the story, courtesy of CBS-Chicago. The video is embedded there.
