LTHS boys golf eager for another run at state
Regional medalist Walsh shoots 67 to lift LTHS to runner-up finish
LTHS shot 286 to notch second place at the Class 3A York Regional. The Lions’ Matt Walsh carded a 3-under 67 to earn the medalist, while Jon Hudson (68), Mike Caplice (75), Dan Hudson (76), Jason Miller (77) and Billy Spartz (78) also contributed for LTHS, which advanced to sectional play this week.
Held at the Maple Meadow golf course in Wood Dale, Class 3A defending state champion Hinsdale Central claimed the York Regional title with a score of 283. LTHS took third in the state last year. At the West Suburban (Silver Division) Conference tournament this year, Hinsdale Central also edged the Lions (shot 301) for top honors.
“The team had had an outstanding season,” LTHS coach Brian Kopecky said. “The goal of making it to state and playing with the best is in our sights.”

Like the boys team, the Lions also finished second (325) in regional play to conference rival Hinsdale Central (315). Medalist Macy Tabachka shot a 76 to pace the Lions, along with solid scores from Melissa Marston and Ciara Rattana who both carded an (81) along with Jameson Mitchell (87). Katie Dougherty and Michele Siamis each shot 91 to round out the Lions’ lineup.

The Bulldogs finished sixth with 518 points at the St. Ignatius Regional of the AA playoffs. Senior Eleanor Ahlberg carded a 112, advancing to the Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional at the Coyote Run golf course this week.
Regional champion Oak Park and River Forest (363), Trinity (399) and St. Ignatius (403) also advanced in the playoffs.
RBHS girls volleyball
The Bulldogs won two of three matches last week, highlighted by a 21-25, 25-16, 25-18 victory over Timothy Christian (Oct. 10). RBHS excelled defensively with 64 digs including Natalia Gheewala’s team-high 23, to turn away the Trojans. Monica Kasper (eight kills, 10 digs), Amanda Lelivelt (eight kills, three blocks), Kayla Noffsinger (seven kills, nine digs) and Olivia Gyssler (10 assists, five digs) also played major roles for the Bulldogs.
In their other matches, RBHS swept Elmwood Park 25-17, 25-15 and lost to Oak Park and River Forest 18-25, 17-25 in the teams’ annual nonconference meeting.
RBHS boys soccer
Head coach Danny Makaric’s squad split a pair of Metro Suburban Conference clashes last week. The Bulldogs notched a 2-1 victory against Glenbard South but dropped a 5-3 decision to Fenton. After a tough start to the season, RBHS (6-8-3, 4-3) has won six of nine matches.
RBHS takes on Morton and Leyden this week to close out the regular season. The Bulldogs will take on regional host St. Laurence Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. in their postseason opener.
LTHS girls swimming
The Lions (324) notched a runner-up finish at the Barrington Invitational. Loyola won the invite with a score of 381. Kimmy Vitek took top honors in diving (377.10) for LTHS.

RBHS garnered a fifth-place finish at the Andrew Invitational. Upcoming events for the Bulldogs include dual meets against Plainfield Co-op (home finale) and at Fenton this week, before the Independent Conference meet takes place on Saturday, Nov. 2.
