Fenwick scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, paving the way for Saturday’s 28-14 win over visiting St. Laurence at Hoffman Stadium in Berywn. With the victory, the Friars put the finishing touches on an outstanding 8-1 regular season campaign. The Friars will tune in to watch Comcast’s IHSA state playoffs pairings show tonight to find out which Class (7A or 6A) they will be put in and who their first-round opponent will be.
Against St. Laurence, Fenwick scored on its first three possessions as running back Robert Spillane (10 carries, 145 yards) scored on a 1-yard reception, and touchdown runs of 60 yards and two yards all within the opening seven minutes of play.
Defensively, the Friars’ Rich Schoen had three interceptions and Jack Rafferty (eight tackles), Aaron Garland (two forced fumbles), Spillane (five tackles) and Justin Rodriguez (two sacks) also pitched in the to hold down the Vikings. St. Laurence scored a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, however, Fenwick controlled the game throughout en route to a 28-14 victory.
The Friars’ other touchdown, aside from Spillane’s scoring hat trick, came on quarterback Gino Cavalieri’s 12-yard pass to Michael Hanrahan at the 6:55 mark of the second quarter, extending the Fenwick lead to 28-6. Cavalieri finished 6 of 15 for 88 yards passing on the day highlighted by his two touchdown passes. Spillane led the Fenwick ground attack, racking up 145 yards on 10 carries, while Charlie Emmons (seven carries, 29 yards) and Grant Miller (nine carries, 43 yards) also contributed for the victors.
Fenwick also notched its second straight Chicago Catholic League Whtie Division title this season. The Friars (No. 4 seed) open the playoffs against Hersey (No. 13 seed) in the Class 7A playoffs this weekend (Nov. 1-2)
