An absolutely crazy weather week ended Sunday with temperatures north of 40 degrees, which melted more than a foot of snow that had fallen since Jan. 1. With temps hitting minus-16 on Jan. 6, the Des Plaines River froze solid. By Sunday, the thaw swelled the river in Riverside to more than 8 feet, causing localized flooding in Riverside Lawn and Swan Pond Park due to ice jamming the river between the Barrypoint Road bridge and the area near the library. On Monday (above) giant shards of ice still floated in the river and littered Swan Pond Park, into which the flood waters spilled over the weekend.
