Yes, today we have a story in the newspaper about the Fourth of July. Isn’t that just wonderful? Summer will, in fact, come this year despite all current evidence to the contrary.
And the Brookfield July 4 picnic will also come this year, despite an initial recommendation to cancel it because of construction in Kiwanis Park. Will that mean a little more effort and expense for the Special Events Commission and village staff? Yes it will, but it’s only temporary and the village’s residents deserve a community-wide celebration, courtesy of the government they generously support.
In the grand scheme, the extra few grand it’s going to cost to host this party won’t amount to a blip on the budgetary screen for 2014. But canceling the party would indeed have made a difference for families on the Fourth, in a bad way.
