A 35-year-old Brookfield man has been charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass to a residence and criminal damage to property after he allegedly kicked open the door of a home in the 3700 block of Forest Avenue while blacked out in a drunken stupor around 2:50 a.m. on April 16.
According to police, the man doesn’t recall kicking open the door and entering the vestibule of the house, where he was confronted by the home’s 68-year-old owner. The homeowner tried to grab the man, who turned around and fled southbound on Forest Avenue.
Police within minutes apprehended the man on Grant Avenue near the alley between Forest and Prairie avenues. The man lives in the 3600 block of Prairie Avenue, just a block away from the home he entered, police said.
The homeowner told police he was asleep on the living room couch when he heard a loud bang and saw a bright, flashing light. He went to the front door and saw a man standing inside the front door. After yelling at the intruder to get out of his house, the homeowner yelled for a family member to call police and chased the intruder, losing sight of him shortly after that.
After apprehending a man who matched the description of the intruder given to them by the homeowner, police said the man was “highly disruptive” and “highly intoxicated.” He reportedly told police he had been drinking at a bar on Burlington Avenue. The bar, according to police, closed at 1:30 a.m.
From the time the bar closed until he was arrested, according to the police report, the man said he couldn’t recall what he had been doing.
“The next thing he remembers was the lights and sirens of police cars,” the police report states.
The alleged offender posted bond after being charged. He faces a May 13 court hearing.
