We just attended our last Riverside-Brookfield High School choir concert and would like to publicly thank choir director, Mrs. Diane Marelli, and the school’s Fine Arts Department for an entertaining and inspiring concert.

The “British Invasion” theme featured a big range of music from Gilbert and Sullivan and Andrew Lloyd Webber to the Beatles and Spice Girls. It was — as always — amazing to watch all the talented students inspired and nurtured by this brilliant choir director.

As our youngest daughter graduates and we reflect on our time at RB, we are grateful for its quality music department and hope the District 208 school board and administration never lose sight of the importance of strong choir, orchestra and band programs.

In a world increasingly focused on test scores, budget cuts and technology, it is important to recognize the value of music in cultivating self-discipline, developing personal presentation skills, encouraging team work, and expressing creativity.

As Plato said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”
