Riverside police have arrested one man and continue to search for another involved in an Aug. 3 altercation at a family party at a home in the 500 block of Byrd Road.

On Monday, police arrested a 31-year-old Chicago man at the residence and charged him with one count of misdemeanor battery. The man allegedly punched a 31-year-old man who intervened to protect the victim, who reportedly was hit over the head with a beer bottle and suffered puncture wounds to his chest.

Riverside police, with the assistance of Chicago police, are still searching for the man suspected of hitting the victim with the bottle. Police no longer believe a third suspect was involved.

Riverside police say they are now looking for a total of three men suspected of being involved an Aug. 3 altercation at a family birthday party in the 500 block of Byrd Road.

Two others who reportedly attempted to intervene in the incident that led to a man getting hit over the head with a beer bottle and suffering puncture wounds to his chest have signed battery complaints against two separate Chicago men. Police continue to search for the man who allegedly struck the victim with the bottle.

In addition, police now say the victim was a 45-year-old Berwyn man, and that he was taken to MacNeal Hospital by his wife. The man initially gave police false information about his identity, said Police Chief Thomas Weitzel.

A 31-year-old Chicago man reportedly was hit over the head with a beer bottle and suffered puncture wounds to his chest consistent with being stabbed with a broken bottle early Sunday morning at an alcohol-fueled child’s birthday party in Riverside, police say.

However, the exact sequence of events remains unclear as police continue to investigate and search for the man suspected of injuring the victim, according to Police Chief Thomas Weitzel. No one has been charged at this time.

The victim’s injuries were described by police as non-life threatening.

“Everyone has been extremely uncooperative except for the victim and the woman who took him to the hospital,” said Weitzel.

Police received notification from MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn at about 12:40 a.m. that they were treating a man who claimed to have been stabbed at a family party at a residence on Byrd Road in Riverside.

The victim reportedly told police that he was knocked unconscious when he was had been hit over the head with a beer bottle. The man suffered other puncture wounds, which could have resulted from falling on glass on the ground or from being stabbed by a bottle, Weitzel said.

No one at the party called police when the incident occurred and police received no prior complaints from neighbors about the party, which was held in the backyard of the home. On Sunday afternoon, a “happy birthday” sign, decorations, tables, chairs and other party items remained undisturbed in the yard.

A 26-year-old woman, who gave police the same Chicago home address as the victim, drove the victim to MacNeal, where personnel notified police. When police responded to the 500 block of Byrd Road, the 20 to 25 people still on the scene were “all extremely intoxicated and belligerent,” according to Weitzel.

North Riverside police were called in to assist in securing the scene and ensuring Riverside police could collect evidence. While police interviewed subjects at the house, Weitzel said it was difficult to piece together a clear picture of what happened, because the people they interviewed were intoxicated. The homeowner reportedly was also uncooperative with police.

“People were so drunk we couldn’t make out what happened,” Weitzel said.

The victim provided police with information about the man suspected of hitting him with the bottle and signed a battery complaint against the man, who is reportedly a family member.
