The Brookfield 10U girls team beat LaGrange 6-5 to post an undefeated record en route to claiming the District 9 championship in July.
After giving up three runs to LaGrange in the first inning of the title game, Brookfield settled down and played almost flawlessly over the next three innings by allowing only two runners reach base, neither of which scored.
Brookfield put their bats to work in the third with a lead-off double by Kira Conroy. The next two batters, Sarah Silva and Kylie Campbell, were both put out at first; however, with two outs Madeline Wenig hit a single driving Conroy home. Wenig then stole second base, third base and home plate on passed balls to score another run. Brianna Episcopo walked and promptly stole second and third. The inning ended with the game tied at 3-3 however as Hayley Belsey was tagged out at second base after a hit to third, but not before scoring Episcopo.
Brookfield led off the fourth inning with Lizzy Leon getting hit by a pitch, then stealing second, third and home for our fourth run. Kylie Hyerdall walked and also stole second and third, with Conroy walking and stealing second. Both players were driven in by Desiree Pisarczyk, who singled to center field for our fifth and sixth runs.
Brookfield’s defense was back on track the top of the sixth, putting out the first two batters. Hyerdall walked the next batter, but quickly recovered by striking out the next batter for the complete-game win.
“We’re very proud of these girls because they worked really hard to bring home the district flag,” Brookfield coach Brian Conroy said. “Our team had good discipline the plate and aggressive base running. Those two aspects won all of our games for us.”
In sectional play, South Elgin edged Brookfield 2-1 and Near North cruised past Brookfield 10-3 to close out Brookfield’s stellar summer season.
