Riverside police have arrested the man suspected of breaking a beer bottle over a relative’s head at a family party on Aug. 3 in the 500 block of Byrd Road.
Daniel Herrera, 23, was charged Friday with aggravated battery, a felony, and will appear in bond court on Saturday at the Cook County Criminal Court complex at 26th and California.
Detectives on Thursday visited Herrera’s last known address in the 2700 block of 55th Street in Chicago, where they took him into custody without incident.
Herrera is suspected of hitting his cousin, a 45-year-old Berwyn man, on the head with a beer bottle during a late-night altercation in the backyard of the Riverside home, where the family had gathered to celebrate a child’s birthday.
The blow on the head knocked out the victim, who also sustained puncture wounds to his upper chest, consistent with being stabbed by the bottle. Police and officials at MacNeal Hospital, where the victim was taken by his wife, are still unsure how the victim received the chest wounds. He could have been stabbed or he could have fallen on broken glass when he hit the ground.
On Aug. 4 Riverside police arrested a 31-year-old Chicago man at the Byrd Road home and charged him with misdemeanor battery. He reportedly punched someone who tried to intervene in the altercation between the victim and Herrera.
