UPDATED: Officials announced shortly after 5 p.m. on Oct. 22 that they were calling off the search after finding a plastic bag with a doll and a rocking chair inside it.

Water rescue teams from as far away as Winfield, Addison and Warrenville are combing the bottom of the Des Plaines River just south of the Cermak Road bridge in North Riverside, looking for objects reportedly thrown into the water by an unidentified woman on Wednesday afternoon.

Eastbound traffic on Cermak Road is backed up from the bridge to First Avenue as cars snake past more than a dozen fire and police vehicles parked on and near the bridge.

Personnel both in the water and in an inflatable boat have checked the river south from the bridge to the nearby Canadian National railroad bridge. So far they appear to have found nothing.

A witness called police at about 1:20 p.m. to report that a woman had tossed what appeared to be three bags from the bridge into the water.

Police reportedly have interviewed someone, but North Riverside Fire Chief Brian Basek said, “No one knows what was in the bags. We’re trying to see if we can locate anything.”
