On behalf of the members of the Riverside Township Lions Club, I want to thank the residents of Riverside Township for their donation of used eyeglasses during Spectacle Sunday in October as well as throughout the year.
The World Health Organization estimates that the eyesight of one-fourth of the world’s population can be improved through the use of corrective lenses. Unfortunately for many, a pair of glasses is both unaffordable and inaccessible. In developing countries, an eye exam costs as much as one month’s wages and a single doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people.
Thanks to the residents of Riverside and North Riverside, the Riverside Township Lions Club was able to donate 1,434 pairs of eyeglasses to the Lions of Illinois Foundation in 2013.
In turn, the Lions of Illinois Foundation distributes donations to the needy in developing nations.
In addition, 106 hearing aids, 14 ink cartridges and 14 cell phones also were donated by the Riverside Township Lions Club to the Lions of Illinois Foundation.
Lions Club collection boxes are available at businesses and public buildings throughout Riverside Township.
