On Thursday, January 22, 2015, the Burlington Northern Railroad completed its installation of pedestrian and vehicle flexible posts at the grade crossing on Longcommon Road. These flexible orange posts were placed on each side of the grade crossing to alert both pedestrians and vehicles as to the designated walkway area and driver turning radius. It serves as an alert to both motorists and pedestrians to not dart into traffic or turn too sharply after clearing the railroad grade crossing when pedestrians are still in the roadway.
Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel stated, “I am very grateful that the railroad took the initiative to install these safety posts and I have no doubt that motorists and pedestrians alike will see a distinct safety improvement. I believe it will benefit pedestrians who are disembarking from the trains, either in the morning rush or at the evening rush, by providing a significant increase in safety as they are walking from the train platform to their homes or parked vehicles in the area.”
