While we thank the Riverside Public Works Department for clearing the streets promptly during the recent fifth-heaviest snowfall in Chicago history, this service does nothing for safe pedestrian crossings at corners.

Many corner property owners make their crosswalks accessible by at least clearing a small path, but too many do not. Those of us who must use the sidewalks to get around have great difficulty once the plows clog these walks. We have been fortunate in not breaking any limbs with our falling this year, but luck can only last so long.

Our thanks to the many residents who are considerate in make sure their sidewalks and crosswalks are manageable. Wish all would do the same.
