Below are candidate-submitted answers to a survey Landmark sent out to all candidates running in this year’s elections.

Age: 47

Office sought:  District 102 school board member

Previous political experience:  none

Previous community involvement:  I have volunteered with AYSO, the YMCA, and Forest Road school

Education:  I have a master’s degree in Human Services and Counseling from DePaul University and a bachelor’s degree in Math and Business Administration from Vanderbilt University

Occupation: I am a stay-at-home dad.  I was a counselor and program manager at a nonprofit, community agency prior to that.

Why do you want to be a school board member? I value education and I want to serve our community. I have experience in program assessment, community outreach, and creating effective partnerships.  I believe this combination of skills and interest will make me an effective school board member.

How many school board meetings have you attended? An audio recording of most meetings is available on the district website.  I have listened to all the meetings from 2013 to present.  I have read the minutes in cases where the audio recording is not available.

What is the most important issue facing the next school board, and what should the solution be?  Some of the key issues facing the board are: 1) managing district finances; and 2) improving communication between the school board and the community.  If l am elected, I look forward to working with the rest of the school board, staff, and community members to provide the best education for the students in school district 102.

If elected,  what changes would you like to have accomplished by the end of your term?  As a community representative it will be my responsibility to understand the community’s priorities for school district 102 and work with all stakeholders to make those a reality.

If elected, what changes would you most strongly resist? I believe a board member has to keep an open mind while listening to the perspectives and opinions of community members, district staff, and other board members.

What other issues facing the school district are of interest to you?  Why?  I will focus on the issues that are of most interest to the community during the four year term.  I will be part of a team with the goal of providing the best education to the children in school district 102.
