The Riverside-Brookfield High School boys volleyball team can play with almost any team for the majority of a match. Finishing games within a given match, however, has been another story. The Bulldogs lost to Wheaton Academy and St. Francis with inconsistent play down the stretch of both matches last week.

The Bulldogs lost to visiting Wheaton Academy 21-25, 22-25 on April 16.

“The match against Wheaton Academy really epitomized our season,” RBHS coach Dan Bonarigo said. “We play well for about two-thirds of the match. In Game 1, we were at 18-all and then they have a six-point run and we lose. We fought back a bit in the second game, but then we gave them a four-point run which we can’t let happen.

“That’s been happening just about every match. I want someone to step up and be the man. We have a lot of guys who make plays early but we really struggle later in games.”

The Bulldogs also fell to St. Francis 19-25, 25-22, 26-24 in a three-game thriller on April 15.

“We were up late in Game 3 [against St. Francis] and then we made some mistakes late,” Bonarigo said. “For as much as we struggled last season, I’ve learned to not get as caught up in the record. This year, the team we have is what we’re running out there and we’ve got to do better.”

For the season, team leaders include: Maclean Nolan (63 kills, 33 blocks), Lukas Kulbis (53 kills, 58 digs), Erik Hartwig (52 kills), Gabriel Espinoza (132 assists), Peter Fergusen (74 assists), Zach Georgopolous (115 digs) and David Wackrow (27 kills, 22 blocks).

RBHS hosts Lemont on Tuesday, April 21 at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs visit Hinsdale South on Thursday, April 23 for another 6 p.m. match.
