Despite the uncooperative weather, the Riverside-Brookfield High School Day of Service was a great success, with more than 220 student, parent, and staff volunteers cleaning up and beautifying their communities. On April 25, the high school community participated in 23 projects in Brookfield, Broadview, LaGrange Park, North Riverside, and Riverside. Efforts were coordinated through a joint committee spearheaded by the RBHS PTO and the Day of Service Student Committee.
The Day of Service volunteer committee contacted local municipalities and civic organizations including the Brookfield Beautification Commission, the Salt Creek Watershed Network, the Cook County Forest Preserves, and the Frederick Law Olmsted Society of Riverside to execute clean up, restoration and plantings in community parks and public areas.
The Day of Service committee helped orchestrate the student groups, clubs and teams into work teams. Student volunteers were recruited by the Day of Service Student Committee. Student artist Remy Doornebos designed the 2015 logo that appeared on the front of the Day of Service shirts, posters and other communication.
Assistant Principal John Passarella, whose impending retirement was celebrated at the Day of Service After Party, stated, “RBHS is a warm learning environment because of events like this! I’m proud to say I’m a Bulldog!”
Major financial contributions to the Day of Service were made by the RBHS PTO, the Frederick Law Olmsted Society of Riverside, and the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce. The After Party celebration was supplied entirely by refreshment and monetary donations from the following community businesses: Al’s Pizzeria, Aunt Diana’s Candy, Bill’s Place, Chef Shangri-La, Chik-Fil-A, Costco North Riverside, CVS – Brookfield, DiNico’s Pizza, Domino’s Pizza, Euro Center, Fuego Restaurant, Golden Wok, Grand Tavern Bar and Grill, Jimmy’s Place, La Penca, Mary’s Morning Mix-Up, Minuteman Convenience Center, Paisan’s Pizzeria, Pure’s Cookie Outlet, Quest Food Management Service, Riverside Foods, The Sanctuary, Tischler’s Finer Foods, Tipster’s Village Pub, Tony’s Finer Foods – North Riverside, Trader Joe’s – LaGrange, Vesuvio Bakery, Village of North Riverside, Zoo City Treats.
