The semifinals of the IHSA boys tennis state tournament served as a rematch between the top players from West Suburban Conference Silver Division rivals Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central.

Hinsdale Central’s Martin Joyce defeated LTHS sophomore Gianni Ross 6-4, 6-4 in the championship match at the North Shore Racquet Club in Northbrook.

The Ohio State-bound Joyce advanced to the final by beating Gianni’s older brother, Alex, 6-0, 4-6, (10-4) in the semifinals.

In the other semifinal, Gianni Ross topped 2014 state champion Eddie Grabill of Hinsdale Central 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Alex Ross won the third-place match by default against Grabill after the latter withdrew from the match because Hinsdale Central had already clinched the state title.

Collectively, the Ross brothers finished 12-2 at the state finals with each player’s sole loss to Joyce. They are both prolific players nationally, with each earning a five-star rating from TennisRecruiting.net. Alex has signed with Vanderbilt, while Gianni is the top sophomore in Illinois and No. 3 in the nation.

In doubles action at the state finals, the duos of Cuyler Burke/Tanner Burke and Rory O’Donnell/Jack Bernstein each won three of five matches to earn five points apiece for LTHS.

Deerfield’s Chris Casati and Niko Wasilewicz edged Glenbrook North’s Miguel Perez and David Zakhodin 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the doubles final.

Hinsdale Central (47 points) won the team standings to notch its fourth consecutive state championship and 24th overall, followed by LTHS (37), New Trier (31), Deerfield (26) and Stevenson (25) to round out the top five.
