Brookfield Village Clerk Cathy Colgrass Edwards died Wednesday night at her home, officials have confirmed. She was 68 years old.
Police conducted a well-being check at Edwards’ home in the 3600 block of Madison Avenue on Aug. 5 at about 6:45 p.m., said Lt. James Episcopo, after someone reported being unable to reach her by phone.
Edwards reportedly was on vacation in Door County, Wisconsin, but cut the trip short to return home because she wasn’t feeling well. It had been a tough year, healthwise for Edwards, who spent about two weeks in the hospital in April after undergoing surgery to mend an intestinal blockage.
At the time, she was disappointed to miss the village-wide election, which took place on April 7. It was the first time the PEP Party stalwart had missed an election, she said.
But she returned to the board table in late April and hadn’t missed a board meeting since that time. Edwards was elected clerk in 2013 after serving two terms as a village trustee. She also formerly worked as the director of the Department of Parks and Recreation for the village of Brookfield.
Services are pending. Village manager Keith Sbiral said that bunting would be placed at the entrance of the village hall and flags would be lowered to half staff in Edwards’ memory.
More details as they become available.
