The village of North Riverside is going to have to wait at least another month before a Cook County judge rules on whether it has the authority to unilaterally terminate its contract with North Riverside Firefighters Union Local 2714.

In addition, the village will now have to defend itself against the union’s claims that in trying to outsource firefighting services to a private company, the village is violating the Illinois Constitution.

On Aug. 28, Judge Diane J. Larsen allowed the union’s motion to file a counter claim against the village over the objection of the village, which argued the union failed to follow the correct procedure in filing the counter claim.

Larsen was supposed to rule on the village’s motion for summary judgment — made in October 2014 — on Sept. 9. But after allowing the counter-claim to move forward, Larsen combined both the village’s motion for summary judgment and the counter-claim and set a date for considering both matters and hearing oral arguments.

That hearing has been set for Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Richard J. Daley Center in Chicago.
