Veteran tour guide Gary Mechanic will lead a free public walking tour of the Chicago Portage National Historic Site, 4800 S. Harlem Ave., on Saturday, Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Mechanic will explore the “birth story” of Chicago from its geological beginnings of the portage to how it is still functioning in Chicago today. The tour is approximately one mile in length on a gravel path through the woods. Long pants and walking shoes or boots are recommended.
Meet up at the monumental statue of Marquette, Joliet and their Native American guide.
