The first two games of the regular season simply have reinforced what Riverside-Brookfield High School coach Brendan Curtin already knew about the team’s quarterback Ryan Swift and top wide receiver Dean Zigulich.
The two returning All-Conference players are a potent scoring combination.
The senior duo was at it again on Friday night by collaborating for a pair of touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 34-19 win over Wauconda. Swift threw a TD pass to Ziguluch in each half plus scoring strikes to Al’Lan Carter and Jhalen Willliams.
The Bulldogs also benefitted from their special teams when Jake Campbell blocked a punt, scooped the ball up and returned it in from 25 yards out into the end zone, extending the advantage to 20-7 midway through the second quarter.
5-8, 175-pound junior running back John Mieczkowski added a 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to make the score 34-7. Although Wauconda responded with a pair of touchdowns to pull within 34-19, the Bulldogs played well defensively overall holding its second straight opponent to under 20 points.
RBHS (2-0) faces St. Edward in a Metro Suburban Conference crossover on Saturday, Sept. 12 (7:15 p.m.) at Lyons Township High School.
The game will be played at LTHS as their new football stadium, the Kennelly Athletic Complex, remains under construction. The Bulldogs’ first game at the KAC is slated for Friday, Oct. 2 against Immaculate Conception at 7:15 p.m.
