Can the Riverside Fire Department put the past behind it? That’s what the village’s administration is betting on in naming Matthew Buckley as its permanent fire chief after he spent the past couple of months as interim chief.
During the past four years, serving as deputy fire chief to a chief who lived in the northern suburbs, Buckley was the de facto commander on the ground in Riverside. He is fiercely dedicated to his jobs as a public safety official and that example is something his commanders and firefighters can look to.
At the same time, Buckley says he wants his command staff to feel they have a real stake in how the department operates, that it’s not merely a top-down operation.
A fire department whose personnel work hand in hand with one another is what Riverside needs and deserves.
