Time was when one went to the local library to check out a book, read a periodical, do a little research or even do homework, because it was a quiet place. Times and things have changed and so have libraries.
They are much of what they once were, except for being a very quiet place. But today they are also much more; they are resource centers.
Today’s libraries are, of course, funded by taxpayers, but they are also supported by fundraising groups. Riverside Public Library receives help in many ways from the Friends of the Library (and who wouldn’t want to be a friend to the library?). Aside from their annual fundraising appeal, the Friends hold events to generate funds for specific needs of the library.
On Saturday, Oct. 3, you can play bingo and support the library at “Bing-O-Ctober” from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road. There will be cash prizes, drawings for prizes and the fun of playing a variety of Bingo games.
The ticket price is $25 and can be purchased at the library. Proceeds will assist the library in their space planning for adult materials collection on the main level. More information can be obtained by calling the Riverside Public Library at 442-9462.
North Riverside Library gala fundraiser
Many of you may remember when the North Riverside Library was a simple storefront, but things sure did change. Now a lovely building located at 2400 Desplaines Ave. serves the various needs of local residents.
Supporting the library is the North Riverside Library Foundation which on Saturday, Oct. 17 will hold its first Autumn Gala fundraiser to be held at the Riverside Golf Club.
The event will include dinner, a silent auction and entertainment. The evening will also include entertainment provided by Peter Oprisko and his tribute to “Fabulous Frank”, old blue eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. Proceeds from the evening will support the technology needs of the library.
Tickets are $75 and can be purchased at the library. For further information contact the North Riverside Public Library at 447-0869.
The Riverside Friends of the Library and the North Riverside Library Foundation consist of volunteer boards that share an interest in their local libraries and help support various needs which may not be covered in the budgets.
