Rough railroad grade crossings are easy to find around the western suburbs, but there is none worse than the Indiana Harbor Belt rail crossing in LaGrange Park on 31st Street a few blocks west of Kemman Avenue.
But that’s all about to change. The Illinois Department of Transportation plans on closing the grade crossing for repairs, weather permitting, starting at 7 a.m. on Nov. 12 through Nov. 22.
That means 31st Street will be closed at the grade crossing and traffic is being detoured. According to IDOT, westbound traffic will be directed north on Maple Avenue, the west on Cermak Road and south on LaGrange Road. Eastbound traffic will follow the reverse route.
Expect delays and allow extra time for trips through the area.
