As 2015 draws to a close, I want to thank the many people who made this past year such a successful one for our village. In addition to making significant progress on a wide range of initiatives derived from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s plan for Riverside, the village accomplished many projects that have been discussed for years if not decades.

Our village also was able to obtain unprecedented grant funding to assist in many of these projects, greatly reducing the expenditure of tax dollars. These successes have been made possible by the strong support of our residents, a dedicated Board of Trustees willing to tackle difficult policy decisions, the invaluable input from our advisory boards and commissions, and a talented and committed village staff. You can find a link to the village’s year-end review on the village’s homepage at

In addition to these practical accomplishments, our many volunteer organizations continued their tradition of selfless service and giving to those in need. In so doing, they reflect the deep spirit of goodwill that is the foundation of our village. We are indeed blessed to live in a community that values mutual respect and kindness among neighbors.

Whether a family has been here for generations or has recently arrived, we are all part of the same village, and that open embrace makes our community a wonderful place to live and to raise the next generation of Riversiders.

Our future is bright, and as we look forward to the new year we can all take pride in many achievements of 2015. On behalf of the Village Board of Trustees, our commissions and boards, and our village staff I wish everyone a safe and happy new year.

Ben Sells, village president
