The man fatally shot while sitting in his vehicle at the intersection of Grant and Forest avenues in Brookfield shortly after noon on Wednesday, Jan. 27 has been identified as 33-year-old Michael Smith, a resident of the 3700 block of Forest Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Brookfield police are reporting that the shooting victim, described as a 33-year-old Brookfield man, has died. Officers found the victim unresponsive in the front seat of a silver sedan at the intersection of Grant and Forest avenues. He was taken by paremedics to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood where he was pronounced dead at 12:46 p.m.

Police Chief James Episcopo said that the victim reportedly had just pulled his vehicle to the curb when another vehicle pulled up next to him. Someone from the other vehicle then fired several shots at the victim. Markers on the pavement indicated that police had discovered at least seven or eight shell casings outside the victim’s vehicle. The shots appeared to have been fired at close range.

Witnesses told police that the offenders fled southbound on Forest Avenue in a vehicle. Assisting Brookfield police in its investigation are the Illinois State Police, the west suburban Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT) task force and the Felony Investigation Assistance Team (FIAT).

Riverside-Brookfield High School in Riverside and Hollywood School, S.E. Gross Middle School and St. Paul Lutheran School in Brookfield have been placed on soft lockdown following a reported shooting in Brookfield shortly after noon on Wednesday.

Brookfield police are reporting that a shooting victim, described as a 33-year-old Brookfield man, has died. Witnesses told police that the offenders fled southbound on Forest Avenue in a vehicle. Assisting Brookfield police in its investigation are Illinois police, the Major Case Assistance Team and the Felony Investigation Assistance Team.

Brookfield police responded to a report of shots fired at the corner of Grant and Forest avenues at about 12:10 p.m. Police reported finding a man suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle at that location. He has been transported to a hospital for treatment. There was no immediate word on his condition or any other details.

The incident is being investigated by Brookfield police, assisted by other agencies including Riverside and the Illinois State Police.
