The Riverside-Brookfield High School boys volleyball team is already close to surpassing last year’s win total. The Bulldogs, who finished 13-25 last season, won the Waukegan Invite and seven matches overall last week to improve to 12-2 this spring.
RBHS defeated Taft, Northside Prep, Maine West, Northtown Academy and Waukegan to claim the Waukegan tourney title in convincing fashion. Maclean Nolan was named tournament MVP and finished with 58 kills, 14 digs, 16 blocks and a .430 hitting percentage for the week. Erik Hartwig (42 kills, 35 digs), Zach Georgopolous (40 digs) and Peter Ferguson (102 assists, 18 digs) also played key roles for the Bulldogs.
In other matches last week, RBHS beat St. Patrick 26-24, 15-25, 25-22 and Leyden 25-22, 25-14.
The Roadrunners remained unbeaten with a 5-1 win against Kenwood. Chris Campagna allowed two hits and struck out four in four innings to pick up the win. Carson Bartels went 2-for-3 and scored twice for Nazareth (8-0).
The Bulldogs split a pair of games with a 10-2 win against Wheaton Academy and 6-0 loss at Nazareth. Alivia Ranieri pitched a complete game two-hitter with five walks and two strikeouts to earn the win against Wheaton Academy. Kailyn Ngo led the Bulldogs (3-5, 1-0 Metro Suburban Conference) offensively with three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
LTHS girls track
Lyons Township freshman Sarah Barcelona won the 3,200-meter run in a meet-record 10 minutes, 57.14 seconds at Downers Grove South’s Mustang Invitational Saturday. Barcelona easily beat the previous meet record of 11:10.02 from 2015.
Sophomore Julia Cozzi won pole vault (8 feet, 6 inches) and the 1,600 relay of sophomore Tara Schwarz, junior Maggie Caplice and seniors Vanessa Flaherty and Luci Lussier prevailed in 4:11.17.
The Lions (96 points) finished second to the host Mustangs (131) in the eight-team field.
Fenwick boys tennis
Fenwick cruised to a 4-1 win against Montini in Oak Park. Freshman Carlos Gutierrez and senior Danny Reardon earned wins in singles, while Ryan Chapman/Pat Walsh and Sean Heslin/Jon Kulhanek recorded victories in doubles.
Fenwick girls water polo
Eryn Kulik led the Friars with four goals in a 13-6 victory over visiting Naperville North. Clare Durkin and Kelly Frumkin chipped in two goals apiece.
Fenwick (11-5-1) will compete in the Stevenson Tournament this weekend.
LTHS boys gymnastics
The Lions scored a season-high 141.25 points at Friday’s Canino Invitational at Hinsdale Central to finish third among the annual meeting of the 10 West Suburban Conference programs. LTHS finished behind Glenbard West (149.145) and Hinsdale Central (season-high 143.73).
Fenwick girls soccer
The Friars edged Dundee-Crown 2-1 in overtime at the PepsiCo Showdown on Saturday. Captains Caitlin Josephs and Colette Jaslowski each scored a goal and senior Moira Hillsman and sophomore Shannon Erhardt led defensively as Fenwick improved to 6-3.
The Friars fell to Trinity 6-5 in their conference opener. First baseman Margaret Planek hit a three-run home run, while freshman third baseman Rachel Martinez (3-for-4, RBI) and senior shortstop Giselle Diaz (2-for-4) also contributed offensively for Fenwick (5-3, 0-1).
