The date was June 11, 1966 when Riverside resident Judy Purvin became a June bride. In a wedding ceremony at her home parish in Riverside, St. Mary’s, she became Mrs. John Scully.

This year, the couple will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and will be marking the event with a family Mass at St. Mary’s with a luncheon celebration to follow at The Chew Chew.

The Scullys will be joined in celebrating with their children and their spouses; Melissa (David) Kotrba, Julie (Jack) Tucek, and John III (Erica). The Scullys’ grandchildren, Grace and Emma Tucek, John IV and Shae will add to their grandparents’ joy in celebrating.

The anniversary fun will continue later in the year when the Scullys, their children, grandchildren, a cousin and her family all take off to Jamaica for fun in the sun.

The Scullys’ daughter Julie and her husband, Jack Tucek, celebrated their 20th anniversary in April. Both couples have had a good example of a lasting marriage with Judy’s parents, Ted and Mary Purvin, having celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary on May 18. Papa is 97 and GG is 92. Congratulations to all.

Lionized: Each year the Riverside Township Lions Club chooses someone to be the recipient of the Bill Jansky Award, named for a longtime Riverside resident who not only was a businessman but was active within the community, particularly the Lions Club.

Upon his death the organization along with Jansky’s son, Jon, established the award to recognize a person who exemplifies many of the late Bill Jansky’s qualities.

This year’s recipient is Dave Moravecek, whose presence looms large in the community, and I don’t only mean his height. Dave is the owner of Ivins-Moravecek Funeral Home, is the longtime president of the Riverside Chamber of Commerce, and is also a member of the Lions Club.

He is known as a very generous man in many ways, supportive of many of the organizations in the community in which he actively participates. He very seldom says “no.”

The award was presented to Moravecek at the May meeting of the Lions Club President Alex Gallegos and Jack Wiaduck, a Lion member on the selection committee for the award.

Congratulations, Dave, and I will see you on July 4 when you and I will be doing the play by play of Riverside’s parade for Riverside TV.
