Can’t stop the music

• The Brookfield Jazz Society hosts an evening of live jazz featuring the Greg “Spats” Studebaker Trio on Thursday, Aug. 3 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the lower-level Jazz Room of Sawa’s Old Warsaw, 9200 W. Cermak Road in Broadview.

Studebaker is a multi-instrumentalist who can recreate jazz sounds from Louis Armstrong to Django Reinhardt. Minimum band donation of $7 for Jazz Society members ($10 for non-members). Open to the public. Music starts at 7:15 p.m.

• The Brookfield Recreation Department continues its Outdoor Concert Series with the country music stylings of Smokin’ Gunz on Friday, Aug. 4 at 7 p.m.

Concerts are held at the band shell in Kiwanis Park, Arden and Brookfield avenues. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held next door, inside the Brookfield Village Hall, 8820 Brookfield Ave. Free.

• If you like your music with a side order of classic cars, head over to the North Riverside Village Commons, 2401 Desplaines Ave. on Thursday, July 3 at 7 p.m. where North Riverside Parks and Recreation is hosting a concert and car show.

Rock out with Saturday June Band and stroll among dozens of vintage vehicles while enjoying ice cream floats, grilled specials and spiked tea. Be sure to vote for your favorite car in the car show.  

Endless Summerfest

Looking for a summer festival nearby? Head on over to Gordon Park, 150 Linden Ave. in LaGrange for the village’s Endless Summerfest on Aug. 4-6.

The event runs from 5 to 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 4, noon to 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 5 and noon to 10 p.m. on Aug. 6. There’s live music every night as well as carnival rides, a car show (Sat. 11 a.m.-4 p.m.), food, beer and wine, community business booths, bingo, a human foosball tournament (Fri. and Sat.) and a princess tea party (Sun. 2-3 p.m. and 3-4 p.m.). The fest closes Sunday night with a fireworks show.

Admission is $3 on Friday and $5 after 5 p.m. on Saturday. Kids under 12 free.

Walk on the wild side

Friends of the Chicago Portage will host a walking tour of the Chicago Portage National Historic Site, 4800 S. Harlem Ave., on Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Veteran tour guide Jeff Carter will explore the “birth story” of Chicago from geological beginnings to how the portage functions today. The tour is a half-mile in length on a gravel path through the woods. Wear long pants and walking shoes.

Tours are free and open to the public. Meet at the monumental statue at 10 a.m.

Picnic at The Scottish Home

The Chicago Scots invite the public to the 101st Annual Scottish Home Picnic on Saturday, Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Scottish Home, 2800 Desplaines Ave. in North Riverside.

Bring the family and join the summer celebration, which features live music, including bagpipes, Highland dancers, horse-drawn trolley rides, children’s activities, food and drink and a bake sale.

See the Show, Become the Pro

Brookfield Public Library, 3609 Grand Blvd., hosts a special after-hours event with professional juggler and circus artist Jason Kollum on Friday, Aug. 4 at 6:30 p.m.

Enjoy Kollum’s amazing feats of juggling and afterward let him show you how he does it during an interactive, hands-on workshop for kids.
