A trio of Brookfield Village Hall employees are in a bit of hot water after two of them allegedly took it upon themselves, on Aug. 11, to remove a vinyl banner outside a local tavern, which they concluded violated village codes.
The employees, a woman and two men, whose names were not released by police, had been having drinks after work at Irish Times, 8869 Burlington Ave., after also reportedly having consumed alcohol during the outdoor concert at nearby Kiwanis Park earlier in the evening.
As they left Irish Times about 11:20 p.m., according to a police report of the incident, the female employee remarked that a banner hanging outside the bar was in violation of village code. She and one of the men removed the banner, according to the police report, and began to walk away with it.
When confronted by a bouncer outside the bar, the employees dropped the sign and at least one of them began to run away.
According to the police report, the employees were apologetic and a male employee stated he should have addressed any problems with the bar’s owner. No one was charged with a crime or issued any citations.
Village Manager Keith Sbiral, who was not one of the employees involved in the incident, confirmed the incident, saying he contacted the village’s law firm the following Monday, and the employees would be disciplined.
“I don’t think it’s a termination offense, but there will be serious discipline,” Sbiral said. “It’s embarrassing to me. This is not the most shining moment of village staff.”
