Herta Jurkutat

Herta Jurkutat (nee Hochleitner), 86, of Brookfield, died on Sept. 5, 2017. 

Born on Nov. 26, 1930, she worked as a cashier in the retail sector prior to retirement. Ms. Jurkutat was the wife of the late Johann Jurkutat; the mother of Alan Jennings, Margaret Davis, Walter Jurkutat, Albert Jurkutat, Regina (John) Logan, Richard Jurkutat, Ruth (Joseph) Gross; the grandmother of John Davis, Keziah Logan, Luke Logan, Emily Gross and Lillian Gross; and the sister of Irene and Vera Hochleitner. 

A funeral service was held Sept. 8 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Brookfield, followed by interment at the Lithuanian National Cemetery.

 Gloria Koukol (Lukash), 72, of Brookfield, died on Sept. 8, 2017. 

She was born Sept. 23, 1944 and enjoyed her many travels and spending time with her grandchildren. 

Ms. Koukol was the mother of Susan (James) Svehla, Kathleen (Antony Setzer) Feltz, Carol Duerkes and Michael (Sarah Fine) Koukol and the grandmother of Ashley and Austin Svehla, Jacob and Owen Feltz, Ryan and Katelynn Duerkes, Alexander, Jayden and Nicholas Koukol. 

Visitation is on Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 3 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday, Sept. 13 from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at Hitzeman Funeral Home, 9445 31st Street in Brookfield. A funeral Mass was will be celebrated Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. at St Louise de Marillac Church in La Grange Park, followed by interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside. 

Lillian Macadlo, 89

Brookfield homemaker

Lillian R. Macadlo, 89, of Brookfield, died on Sept. 8, 2017 at the Burgess Square Nursing Home. 

She was a homemaker who enjoyed solving word puzzles, reading, and was a member of the St. Barbara Parish Council of Catholic Women. 

Ms. Macadlo is survived by her children, Shirley Colaianni, Kathleen (Dennis) Klenzak, Marie Macadlo, John P. (Marla) and Donald Macadlo; her grandchildren, Jeffrey (Alexandra) Colaianni; Kimberly and Matthew (Alicia) Klenzak, and Kayla and Lauren Macadlo; and her siblings, Otto Osterland and Mary Kouri. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Macadlo. 

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Barbara Church, Brookfield, on Sept. 12, followed by interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside. 

The family appreciates Mass offerings as a memorial.

Edward Smulski, 86

Retired from Elkay

Edward Smulski, 86, of Lyons, died on Aug. 29, 2017. 

Mr. Smulski served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was retired from a career with Elkay Manufacturing. 

Mr. Smulski was the husband of Arlene Smulski and the father of Angie (late Christopher) Biggin and Jackie Smulski. Inurnment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Ivins/Moravecek Funeral Home, Riverside, handled arrangements.

Victoria O. Vala, 98

Riverside homemaker

Victoria O. Vala, (nee Kulhanek), 98, of Riverside, died on Aug. 31, 2017. She was a homemaker. 

Ms. Vala was the wife of the late Alden Vala and James Dvorak; the mother of Alden (Karen) Vala and the late Victoria Gay (the late Glen) Hess; the grandmother of Gretchen Trofa, Gregory Hess, Jason Vala and Sally Vala; the great-grandmother of eight; the sister of the late Elsie Cook and Laddie Kulhanek; and the aunt of Geri Stone, Laddie Kulhanek and Ralph Cook. 

Services have been held. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park.

Dean Wittenberg, 69 (photo)

High school history teacher

Dean L. Wittenberg, 69, of Brookfield, died on Sept. 8, 2017. 

Born on April 9, 1948 in Chicago to the late William C. and Marilyn Wittenberg, he was an educator, storyteller, history aficionado and a model train enthusiast. 

Mr. Wittenberg spent the majority of his career working for the Chicago Public Schools where he was a librarian and history teacher at Dunbar Vocational High School. 

He was a faithful member of St. Louise de Marillac Parish, where he was actively involved with the Men’s Club. He served on the board of the Brookfield Public Library for several years, coached Brookfield National Little League and served as a Scout leader for Troop 111. 

Ever the handyman, he enjoyed numerous annual trips to Clarksdale, Mississippi doing volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity. His heart belonged to his grandchildren who he loved to make laugh and who always made him laugh in return.

Mr. Wittenberg is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his children, Amy (Christopher) Moravec and Michael (Angela) Wittenberg; his grandchildren, Henry and Milo Wittenberg and Charlotte and Ellenore Moravec; his brother, William (Geri) Wittenberg; and his several nieces, nephews and dear friends. 

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at Hitzeman Funeral Home, 9445 31st St. in Brookfield. Funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. on Sept. 14 at St. Louise de Marillac Catholic Church, 1144 Harrison Ave. in La Grange Park.
