Shhhh! Quiet! You are in the library! That’s how it used to be when you went to library. We went to check out books, look up information, have stories read to us, maybe read a magazine and acquaint ourselves with the Dewey Decimal System. Kids ask your parents about that.

These days when we go to the library, we can still do most of the above mentioned things, but we can also do a whole lot more. In today’s, library one can enter a world of technology, research with the aid of computers and a whole new world to be visited.

North Riverside’s library, located at 2400 Desplaines Ave., is a lovely building conducive to all a library should be, including a pleasant atmosphere — much different from the storefront library they had across the street from today’s building. That building wasn’t big enough to house much.

All libraries have a staff of well-trained people, but there are often groups of people behind the scenes who help supplement those items not covered by budget. In North Riverside, that’s the job of the North Riverside Library Foundation, a nonprofit organization that seeks to bring the community together while supporting the library’s needs. The organization has done that through fundraising efforts, and this year the group will be holding its 2nd Annual Autumn Gala.

The gala will be held Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Riverside Golf Club, 2520 Desplaines Ave., just a block south of the library in North Riverside starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $75 per person and include one drink (followed by a cash bar), a buffet dinner and entertainment featuring the music of Char Luporini, Spencer Keyes and Chuck Fuscone.

The foundation’s gala includes a silent auction featuring a travel package, gift baskets, a spa package and other donated items. Tickets may be purchased at the library or through www.eventbrite.com. Just type “North Riverside Library Foundation” into the search field on the website’s home page and click the link.

Last year’s proceeds provided funding for technology and technology access. They recently purchased two children’s computers, a multifunction scanner and online magazine subscriptions.

Funds raised from this year’s gala will continue to enhance the technology programs at the library and other things on the North Riverside Library’s wish list.

Take the time to support and visit your local library; see how it has changed and improved over the years. Remember, libraries aren’t just for books anymore.
