A resident of the 3700 block of Morton Avenue, Brookfield, called police last week to report that sometime between 10 p.m. on April 3 and 5:30 p.m. on April 4, someone had tried to break into his home.
According to the police report, a basement window screen had been damaged and a rear basement window was broken out. In addition, a door to the basement appeared to have been kicked in.
The homeowner said he did not find anything missing from the basement, and the main living area of the house did not appear to be disturbed.
BBs damage vehicles
A resident of the 3500 block of Park Avenue, Brookfield, contacted police on the morning of April 7 to report that a vehicle parked on a pad near the alley had been damaged overnight.
According to police, the driver’s side window and rear gate window were shattered. Police said based on a hole in the window, it appeared someone had shot out the windows with a BB or pellet gun.
Later that same morning, a resident of the 9000 block of Lincoln Avenue called to report that his vehicle, which had been parked overnight in front of his home, also was damaged.
Police observed the front passenger side window to have a small impact point consistent with being struck by a BB or pellet.
Liquor stolen from stock room
Two men walked into the CVS pharmacy at 9139 Broadway Ave. in Brookfield at about 9:30 p.m. on April 4, entered the rear stock area without setting off an alarm, and walked off with 10 bottles of booze valued at about $475.
An employee said the two men came into the store, usually together, every couple of weeks. Their activity in the store on April was captured by surveillance cameras, which the employee reviewed the following day after observing that eight bottles of cognac and two bottles of vodka were missing from boxes in the stock room.
Vehicle break-in
A 26-year-old Chicago man called police on April 8 at about 5:40 p.m. to report that someone had forced open the driver’s side window of his 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, which was parked in the lot at the North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road, to gain entry and steal several items.
Among the items missing were a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses, a Gucci vest, Gucci leather bag, an Armani suit, a Burberry backpack, Wolverine work boots, a rose gold bracelet and work clothes.
The total loss was estimated at about $9,000.
Package thief observed
Police responded to the 3500 block of Woodside Avenue, Brookfield, at about 6:15 p.m. on April 5 after a resident called to report a suspicious incident.
The resident said he was looking out a window when he saw someone cutting through his backyard. The person threw something to the ground as he walked away. Afterward, the resident went to investigate and recovered a small, empty box that had contained an infant-care product. There were also two Amazon envelope packages on the ground.
The packages were addressed to a resident of the block, who identified the packages as baby shower gifts sent to her from out of state.
Most Aggrieved Graffiti Artist
A resident of the 3700 block of Kemman Avenue called police on April 3 to report that someone had defaced her lawn sign, which stated “No Human is Illegal” and “Black Lives Matter” by crossing out those words and scrawling “Build the Wall deport Them All!!” and “White Lives Matter Too!!”
On April 5 while on patrol in the vicinity of the Congress Park tunnel, an officer observed that someone had used a black permanent marker to write “God Bless Trump” on the south wall of the stairwell.
Upset over customer service
North Riverside police charged a 39-year-old Chicago man with assault and disorderly conduct after he reportedly threated to “knock the f—–g teeth out” of a female employee at T-Mobile, 2312 Harlem Ave., because he was unhappy with the service she was providing regarding a broken cellphone.
While threatening the employee, the man reportedly told her he’d done prison time for murder, putting the employee “in reasonable apprehension of receiving a battery,” according to police.
Passed out
A 39-year-old Summit man who reportedly passed out behind the wheel of his car at a stoplight at First Avenue and Cermak Road in North Riverside on April 4 at about 8:05 a.m., had a blood-alcohol content of .319, which is almost four times the legal limit of .08.
Another motorist was able to reach inside the stopped vehicle, take it out of gear and remove the keys before police arrived. Paramedics transported the man to the hospital for treatment.
These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, April 2-8, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.
